Some things only get better with time.

Harold and I met on a warm Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1974. He was browsing a bookshop on King Street. I was looking for nothing in particular — the way you do when a day feels too beautiful to spend indoors. He held the door open. I thanked him. And somewhere between that moment and a cup of coffee that lasted three hours, we knew.

We married two years later. And from the very beginning, we shared something beyond love — a quiet obsession with the way beautiful things make people feel.

A Dream on a Quiet Street

In 1987, we took everything we had saved, found a little space in Charleston, and opened the doors of Harold & Alice Boutique.

There was no grand plan. No business degree. No investor meetings. There was a rack of carefully chosen pieces, two people who believed in what they were doing, and a hand-painted sign that Harold hung slightly crooked and refused to straighten because he said it gave it character.

From the very first week, women came in. They tried things on. They left feeling something — and they came back. That was everything we needed to know.

What started as a small boutique became something we never expected — a place where women felt seen.

Thirty-Eight Years of Showing Up

We have opened these doors through rainstorms and heatwaves, through quiet Januaries and the beautiful rush of spring. We have stayed late to steam a dress for a customer's anniversary dinner. We have set pieces aside because we knew — before she even called — that something was perfect for her.

Over the years, the faces changed. The seasons changed. But one thing never did.

Every single piece in this boutique is chosen the way it has always been chosen — slowly, carefully, and always with one woman in mind. You.

We do not carry what is simply trendy. We carry what is timeless, well-made, and worthy of the woman wearing it.

The Next Generation

Our daughter Claire grew up in this boutique. As a little girl she would sit behind the counter doing her homework while we helped customers. She watched. She learned. And somewhere along the way, she fell in love with it too.

Today Claire works alongside us — bringing her own eye, her own warmth, and a energy that reminds us every day that what we built here is worth continuing.

Harold & Alice Boutique is not just a business. It is a family. And after 38 years, our customers have always been part of that family too.
